Course Overview

SKIVL offers the RIISS00054 Traffic Controller Skill Set and RIISS00055 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set as a Combo. This COMBO Course runs over three days and is for people wanting to work as a Traffic Controller and Implementer, directing traffic, setting up traffic control signs and devices and implementing traffic guidance schemes. Successful participants will be issued with a SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Work Training card (TCWT) and a Statement of Attainment for seven units.

Course Requirements

In order to commence this course, you are required to – 

  • Have one or are willing to obtain a White card.
  • Have already turned 18 years of age.
  • Please bring enclosed footwear, high vis shirt (vest available), 100 points of ID, hard hat (if owned), weather suitable clothing and Lunch.
  • 100 points of ORIGINAL ID, including 1 Photo ID on the day (download flyer below for ID Checklist). You will not be allowed to commence the Course if you cannot provide acceptable ID documents. No exceptions
  • Level 2 LLN minimum (refer to Language Literacy Numeracy Chart)
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number. Go to www.usi.gov.au to register

USI Details

From 1st January 2015, each student who will be commencing nationally recognised training in Australia is required to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to be able to obtain their certificate or qualification from their registered training organisation. Students are encouraged to create a USI before attending any training.

RIISS00054 Traffic Controller Skill Set

Looking to kickstart your career in traffic control? The RIISS00054 Traffic Controller Skill Set is the nationally recognised qualification you need to work as a traffic controller in Australia. This course equips you with the skills and knowledge to manage traffic flow safely around worksites, roadworks, and public events. This is an entry-level role that allows you to control traffic with a stop-and-slow bat or other portable traffic control devices, as well as a good starting point for those who wish to find their footing in the traffic control/ management industry. 

Course Outcomes

Participants who successfully complete this course will be issued a (Blue Card) SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Work Training card (TCWT) and a Statement of Attainment for the seven units of competency as  listed below – 

  • RIIWHS201E – Work safely and follow WHS policies and work procedures
  • RIIWHS205E – Control traffic with a stop-slow bat
  • RIICOM201E – Communicate in the workplace
  • RIIWHS206 – Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs

 

Please note that completing this course qualifies you to control traffic using a stop/slow bat but does not permit you to implement Traffic Control Plans.

Your updated skillset

Directing vehicles is about more than just holding a stop-slow bat, it requires both knowledge and practical skill. This course combines theory and hands-on training to equip you with the ability to manage traffic safely and efficiently. You’ll learn how to guide road users and understand critical concepts like stopping sight distances, along with the following key topics:

  • Stop/direct road users using a stop/slow bat and understand stopping sight distances
  • Monitor traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs according to traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes
  • Maintain traffic incident reports
  • Understand the Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs), also known as Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) for the site
  • Assess and respond to changes in the environment, for example, traffic volumes, weather conditions, road conditions, Work Health and Safety (WHS) and operational requirements
  • Carry out risk assessments for personal safety
  • Participate in toolbox talks (specific to traffic control)
  • Use communication methods and devices
  • Conform to traffic control policy and procedures

RIISS00055 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set

Through this course, you will learn how to safely and effectively set up and manage temporary traffic control. For example, placing cones, signs, and barriers around roadworks or events.

Please note – this course does not qualify participants to control traffic with a stop/slow bat or boom gate or to modify existing traffic control plans. 

Course Outcomes

Successful participants of this course will receive their (Yellow Card)SafeWork NSW TCWT card for Traffic Plan Implementer, as well as a Statement of Attainment for the units of competency in the following units –

  • RIIWHS201E – Work safely and follow WHS policies and work procedures
  • RIICOM201E – Communicate in the workplace
  • RIIWHS303 Position, set up and program portable traffic control devices
  • RIIRIS301E – Apply Risk Management Processes
  • RIIWHS302E – Implement a traffic management plan

  • Completing this course will give you the skills and knowledge to –
  • Identify the safety implications of traffic control at road works and personal responsibilities.
  • Set up, monitor and close down traffic control devices according to a nominated TGS/TMP, to WHS and legislative requirements.
  • Operate a two-way radio correctly and effectively.
  • Check, clean and store equipment on completion of work and close down a TGS/TMP
  • Know the basic function of the TGS/TMP system.
  • Locate and apply required legislation, documentation, policies and procedures, including documentation required for worksite projects and required traffic management.
  • Locate and apply required legislation, regulations, codes and procedures, including Austroads Codes of Practice and WHS applicable to temporary traffic management
  • Adapt to all work health and safety (WHS) and operational requirements.
  • Use the site/location assessment, distinguish topographical landmarks and carry out authorised risk control.
  • Conduct an on-site check of a TGS/TMP to identify any unexpected risks/hazards
  • Plan for emergencies that may arise.
  • Ensure spacing between signs and traffic control devices is in line with a TGS/TMP.
  • Understand speed, environment, type and class of vehicles, traffic density, sight lines, environmental conditions, weather patterns and surface type.
  • Maintain traffic incident reports.
  • Monitor traffic controllers.
